You Do Not Have to Vacation in a Hotel to have a Great Time

By Ian Smith

We travel to India to Calcutta to look at a great alternative option to resorts. It's all to straightforward to immerse yourself in 5 star luxury but you never get any idea of what a place is truly like in any way. Our selection in Calcutta takes you right into rhe centre of the town

Fairlawn Calcutta is like staying in Kolkata at the time of the British Empire. While strictly speaking it's a tiny hotel, it is so far away from the concrete and glass monstrosities of the 21st century it has been put inas an alternative to resorts. Enough to point out there are 1 or 2 folk who know about the well guarded secret that's Fairlawn, and among them it's a legend. Here you'll be able to immerse yourself in the genuine Calcutta, as opposed to peering in from the outside. In some respects Fairlawn is sort of a museum, from its furnishings, to the pictures on the wall, you might be living 100 years ago. Not only is there the legendary owner, but the old fashioned manners, long past and usually forgotten, although not here.

The Fairlawn Calcutta sits like an oasis of calm in a noisy street near to Central Market, so right in the middle of where tourists go, which makes it a safe harbor as well. The atmosphere is a mix of a weekend house party, and staying with an aged relative, and you'll be made to feel exceedingly comfortable.

We now journey to England to the Yorkshire dales for another alternative to hotels, an excellent old fashioned English Pub with wonderful bedrooms, and food.

The Fairfax Arms Gilling East is a classical English Pub , and is to be found in a delightful village called Gilling East in Yorkshire. It is an excellent place to go if you want to spend a few days in a beautiful part of Britain, close to a number of historic places, and it's so much pleasanter than any of the local hotels. What makes the Fairfax Arms so special is a mixture of the historic building, the standard of the accommodation, the food in the restaurant, and the outstanding staff. You do not want the trappings of a 5 star hotel when you can get the level of personal care on offer here. You are getting a level of comfort you will not find in most places never mind a British pub. This kind of old fashioned English place should be a magnet for any visitor to the UK.

We now travel halfway round the world to Goa and the Bougainvillea Guest House which shows that 5 star resorts are not required for a tremendous vacation. Certainly you do not want to come to Goa with all the excitement sounds, smells, and colours and then hide away in a hotel. At the Bougainvillea Lodging House you can actually see what's the real Goa, even almost feel and touch it, and definitely smell it. The Bougainvillea which is such a old fashioned little lodging house built to look like Portugese Colonial style, isn't on the coast but has an idyllic position in a quiet area with a nice garden and a wonderful view of the hills. It is run in a very personal way, where guests are made to feel part of the family. The service is quite glorious, the whole place is spotless, and the accommodation is composed of only six terribly stylish apartments. There is not any pool or restaurant, so ensuring the guests get out and explore, although you will be given useful guidance about where to go what to do, and where to eat. To summarise how good the staff are will be to say that nothing is too small for them to worry about, and they make a pleasant little Guest House into fantastic

Hopefully these little insights will open your eyes to what is available as an alternative to hotels.
