The History Of Williamsburg

The Under the Redcoat weekend that wrapped up June 26th brought to life 18th century Williamsburg which was still occupied by the British Army. Revolutionary war re-enactors put their heart and soul into the celebration that integrated programs and demonstrations in Colonial Williamsburg. According to this Daily Journal report, vacationers treasured a firsthand experience of precisely what it was like to live in these parts in those years during the reenactment.

History

At the end of the American Revolution, the British General, Lord Charles Cornwallis brought in martial law in these regions. Britain had been a power to reckon with at that time and those that dared raise their voices against this mighty power faced countless trails and tribulations. This was the time recreated at Colonial Williamsburg this weekend ending on June 26th. Travelers were treated to the enlightening events, activities and demonstrations concentrating around life during the 1781 British occupation here.

Highlights of the Under the Redcoat events

Functions that formed a part of the Under the Redcoat weekend included performances by some of the finest names in Broadway. Grammy winner Doug Katsaros and Emmy nominee lyricist William Schermerhorn presented a wonderful concert created for the Colonial Williamsburg crowd. This program included the assorted musical trends from all over the U.S.A, integrating country, rock, pop, blues and swing. Presented by a Broadway star studded cast, it was definitely a 'not to miss' performance.

Aside from this, people could also watch the drills and exercises, artillery demos and parades that the British soldiers carried out when they occupied these areas. A dragoon exhibition and firing competition exhibited the expertise of the British troops. The ordeals that followed- the declaration of martial law, allowing freedom to enslaved Virginians who agreed to join British troops, the marching in of the Provost Guard- they were the features of the actual re-enactment.
