Haida Gwaii Tours Are A Great Way To See A Remote Place

By Olivia Cross

There is nowhere else like Haida Gwaii. It is an archipelago near the west coast of Canada with a unique people and unique natural history. To explore the islands visitors an take a range of different Haida Gwaii tours or drive themselves around to see their extraordinary beauty and experience a unique people.

Taking just a two hour flight from Vancouver can transport you to this distinct place. Some organised tours take place mainly on land and some are aboard yachts and cruisers. This depends on your preferences and whether you want to see more of the culture or more of the wildlife.

One of the principle attractions of the islands is their natural beauty. They have evolved in isolation (much like the Galapagos) and are home to many unique species. Those who love forests will not fail to be impressed by the pristine temperate rainforests. There is lots of wildlife to see including bears, various species of deer, birds, and marine life. Bear watching and whale watching trips are especially popular.

At the southern tip of the archipelago is the Gwaii Haanas National Park. It is a true wilderness with mile after mile of ancient forest. It also has areas of alpine and sub-alpine tundra, fjords, lakes and wetlands. The brown bears found here are much bigger than their cousins on the mainland and are often seen by hikers. The area is ideal for the adventure enthusiast with miles of trails, kayaking, fishing, climbing and sailing.

The Haida culture is a fascinating and unique one. A good place to start getting to know it is the Haida Heritage Center in Skidegate. They have examples of the local canoe construction, oral story telling, displays of the many local crafts and, of course totem poles.

One of their most iconic creations are their totem poles which were used to tell the stories of their families and were displayed outside the houses. The houses are also interesting, covered in carvings telling the history of the people. In addition to the many indigenous artists there are now many other creators living on the islands. Art enthusiasts will find a number of excellent galleries and workshops to visit.

One of the most magical and mythical parts of the islands can only be reached from the sea. A boat trip is a highlight of a visit. The marine life in the area is abundant with several species of whale, seals, sea lions, and plenty of bird life. A cruise will pass close by abandoned villages and ancient forest, there is no other place like it.

There are a number of companies offering package tours on the islands. There are general ones which include a bit of everything or specialist ones for adventure seekers, natural history and art and culture. Most companies can also offer bespoke tours for small groups and families. Independent travel is possible but there is no public transport on the islands.
