Texas Hill Country: Some Interesting Information

There are many exciting places to visit in the great state of Texas, but few are as scenic and as popular as Texas Hill Country. This region, which includes about two dozen counties, boasts plenty to see and do, including some fantastic scenery. Read on and you will discover some interesting facts about this popular destination.

One interesting geographic feature is the Llano Uplift, which features a multitude of granite domes, including the famous Enchanted Rock. At Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, you can rock climb, hike or enjoy camping and picnicking. The park features a wide variety of native plant species, as well as birds, butterflies, squirrels, armadillos and even white-tailed deer.

In addition to the hills and rocks, there's a lot going on underground and you can visit a number of caverns throughout Texas Hill Country. One cavern, the Cave Without a Name in Boerne, has been named a National Natural Landmark. Inner Space Cavern, which is located near Georgetown and Natural Bridge Caverns are both open for tours and definitely worth a visit.

If you do a search for images of Texas Hill Country, chances are that you will see quite a few pictures featuring fields of lavender. The Texas Lavender Association has its headquarters in Texas Hill Country, and the region features as many as 50 farms specializing in the production of lavender. There are even several notable lavender events, such as the Blanco Lavender Festival or perhaps the Becker Vineyards annual Lavender Fest.

Grapes also grow well in Texas Hill Country, and this region is quite well known for producing excellent vintages. There are more than 35 different wineries in the region and many offer wine tastings and tours. Texas is, in fact, the first place in the United States where grapes were grown to make wine. While you might think California started it all, Franciscan monks started up the Texas wine industry long before the first vines were planted in California.
