The guest rooms are furnished homestay facilities to accommodate tourists, for one or more nights. This type of accommodation emerged in Central Europe in the nineteenth century and has developed over the years. Stone Ridge bed and breakfast helps boost local tourism by offering a cheaper alternative to travellers. B&Bs were initially proposed as a form of rural tourism in addition to agricultural activity but are now prevalent in urban areas.

The term B&B has its distant origins in the hospital vocation of religious institutions. In its modern usage, the use of the term and its development are closely linked to the rise in tourism, the countries of Central Europe are pioneers in this development. The guest house concept appeared in some countries in the early nineteenth century in imitation of wealthy families from the city of Bremen.

In some countries, activities of B&Bs are governed by decrees. These limit the number of rooms that can be offered by an operator. It specifies the need to first obtain a permit issued by the relevant tourism authority. Apart from detailed information on the amenities offered, the regulatory regime imposes minimum opening periods to at least four months a year.

In Wallonia, the cottages belong to the category of tourist accommodation category and are governed by specific provisions of the bed and breakfast code. The generic term guest can be supplemented by the term farm if the rooms are located on a working farm. An operator cannot offer more than five guest rooms, and will use the term guest house if the building has more than three rooms for accommodation. The licensee shall personally welcome customers, and must provide breakfast.

Some owners choose to join marketing bodies, other homeowners choose to make their rooms directly available to the public and the Internet has made things easier. The rooms are subject to a price for one night and breakfast is included, it is a bundled service. Breakfast is taken together in the dining room or family kitchen. Other meals may also be included (mainly at night - dinner), but at most a flat fee is requested. The dining table has a strong guest friendly feel to it. It allows you to chat with the owners and other residents around mostly regional dishes.

This classification is provisional, the independent establishment will be visually inspected. B&B Only is the final classification. The relevant bed and breakfast body performs the classification, through quality checks and certifies B&Bs. The vast majority of B&Bs are not classified because the owners are unfamiliar with the classification or have no need for these paid qualifications.

For homeowners, this is an opportunity to supplement their income or retirement or to deal with home maintenance costs. The opening of cottages is a fairly simple project to undertake but it needs to be well prepared for as any activity. Only a serious approach ensures project success.

Some consider that the activity of guest rooms is at a turning point with the emergence of two categories of owners with opposing ambitions: neo-owners who professionalize a facility to seek profitability. Difficult to quantify, but they employ project managers and run some administrative offices. They are younger and better organized as professionals. These homeowners are investing in both rural and urban areas.
