Great Towns & Cities In Texas Hill Country

By Pammy McGrath

While Texas Hill Country is a fantastic place to visit, it's an even better place to live. If you have visited the many cities or towns in this popular Texas region and thought about making the area your home, why not take the plunge and get started on a home search? Here are a few ideas about where to live.

Fredericksburg is a beautiful historic town located in Gillespie County and within about 90 minutes from Austin and San Antonio. You can opt for a cute historic home near the downtown area or perhaps opt for a ranch house on a large piece of property or just a modern suburban type of home. Fredericksburg has many fun events throughout the year, as well as galleries, museums, restaurants, wineries and many more attractions.

Kerrville is another option for those who love Texas Hill Country. This city, which has about 23,000 residents is located along the banks of the Guadalupe River and is known for its many parks. Residents enjoy recreational activities on the river, as well as a multitude of festivals, such as the Texas State Arts & Crafts Fair and the Kerr County Fair and the Kerrville Folk Festival.

German culture is quite prevalent in many Texas Hill Country areas and towns, as much of the region was settled by immigrants from Germany. New Braunfels, for example, is named after a town in Germany and translates to "brown rock," in English. The attractions of the Guadalupe River and Comal River draw many visitors to the area, and there also is a popular water park, an annual German festival and the Christmas festivities in the town also honor the German heritage.

Of course, some people do prefer living the city life and San Antonio might be ideal for those who want close access to a large metropolitan area. There are dozens of different neighborhoods to consider, such as the historic ambiance of Alamo Heights to the posh elegance of the homes in the far north central areas of San Antonio. Like any large city, however, there are neighborhoods and suburbs to cater to just about any taste or budget. In addition, there are plenty of attractions, from visiting historic sites such as The Alamo to strolling down the River Walk.
