Make Summer An Adventure With Marthas Vineyard Fishing Charters

By Alyce Powell

When summer reaches the East Coast, many Americans from the region decide to take a break from life in the city. Some prefer simple country life and head for areas like the Catskills or a cabin by one of the region's many lakes. Others want sun and surf, so they flock to coastal destinations. Here they can sunbathe, go sailing or simply enjoy some relaxation in their summer homes but some make use of Marthas Vineyard fishing charters to have an even better vacation.

Martha's Vineyard is an island in Massachusetts. At about 100 square miles, it's the third largest East Coast island. It's located just south of Cape Cod and is home to around 16,500 people. Traditionally its economy was based on fishing but now it's a very popular tourist destination, especially among the more affluent members of society.

The Vineyard, as the locals call their home, has a wonderful climate. In summer it's really pleasant because it's not as hot as it gets on the mainland. This is when visitors swarm the towns and villages here, to the point of there being about 100,000 people in the high summer months. In winter, it tends to be a little warmer than most mainland locations. Rainfall is spread out through the year.

Originally the people who lived here were the Wampanoag. They called their island home Noepe. In 1642 the first English settlers arrived and over time there were fishing communities dotted around the coastline. As demand for whale blubber and oil rose, a whaling station was established here too.

Many summer homes on the island belong to the rich and famous. The Kennedy family has a long association with this destination and it was on his way here that John F Kennedy Jr died in a plane crash. The island has also been a summer vacation destination for other politicians, including the Clintons and current President Barack Obama. Many famous musicians, writers, artists and actors come here for the summer and John Belushi was buried in Chilmark.

Many visitors come to the Massachusetts island to see how many celebrities they can spot. However, if you've seen 'Jaws' you'll know that there are spectacular beaches too. Martha's Vineyard has, as its name suggests, a wine industry too and if the kids want to do something different, take them to Oak Bluffs and the oldest carousel in the USA.

There is no bridge connecting the island to the mainland. However, it's still easy to get here. Several ferries service transport people across the sound from coastal towns in Massachusetts. There is also an airport on the island. Those visitors who don't own private jets can take a commercial flight from Boston, New York, Providence, Philadelphia and even Washington DC, although many of these flights are available only in summer.

There are still several communities who make their living from the ocean and fishing is a popular tourist activity. Many fishermen now make their boats available to visitors. You simply need to ask around at the local harbors to find Marthas Vineyard fishing charters that will promise a great day out at sea. Just remember that this island was the location for the movie 'Jaws'.
