F1 Visa For Higher Education In US

By Julie Bauernschmitd

Visa is a document which is needed along with passport to enter any foreign country. F1 visa is a type of student visas which are allotted to full time students who are willing to complete their education in U. S. F type visas are provided by government of United States for students who want to continue their education in U. S colleges. These documents are provided in U. S embassies which are there in almost all countries. Applicants should produce i-20 form from their selected college.

The applicants must be able to show their capacity to support their stay in U. S. This report of economic stability is required because U. S government does not allow such permission holders to work on legal jobs or the options are limited. F2 visas are provided to the dependents of F1 holders. These dependents are not permitted to work in any jobs during their stay.

Laws states that the minor children can attend public schools during this time period of stay in U. S. There are 3 different types in this F series. The first two are as mentioned above. The third type is F3 visa which is specially designed for border commuters, F3 is a type of document provided to the Canada and Mexico residents. The citizens of Canada and Mexico can avail this F3 and attend schools in U. S but they have to stay in their own country.

In earlier days Canadians and Mexicans will be considered as visitors so there was no need of these permissions. After the attack of September 11 these F3 permissions are made compulsory. The students who have first type of permission can work for 20 hours a week within campus but there is no permission outside the campus to work.

By getting the immigration services and citizenship one can be able to work outside the campus. The academic procedure which also includes a 12 months of practical training permission can be given to students. Science and technical students can work for 29 months as per the law amended in 2008. While this time duration student should not exceed more than 90 days as an unemployed.

As per the Federal Insurance Contribution act taxes the F1 permission holders exempted. After first five years of stay this tax exemption will be considered as invalid. Apart from this they have to pay the local taxes and other valid federals. If the student reside in US for less than five years and he wishes to file for his income tax returns then he must fill the forms 1040NR and 1040NR-EZ. Based on the country of origin these rules get changed.

Applicant must satisfy all the U. S immigration and national act guidelines to get such documents. Consular officer decides whether to grant the permission or no based on the application. The candidate should be willing to leave the U. S after completing the academic period. Applicant should be economically capable to support their time period in U. S.

F1 Visas are for students and the applicant should get all the required documents and admission letter from the university. The decision of the consular officer depends on some predefined criteria. The applicant should comply with all these guidelines then his application will be considered.
