How The Vacation Market Has Diversified For Today's Needs

By Harold Spencer

Today's travel environment allows tourists a wide variety of different vacation options. Cruises, adventure vacations, specialty vacations, are all just a few of the many options that are available. The difficulty arises when you want to take a vacation with your whole family. One person going on a trip can often get a special deal. Two people can also get a good deal in many cases, especially with package deals. But that no longer applies when it is a family hunting for a discount. The common assumption is that family travel means travel with the kids - those rambunctious ruffians who are much better seen than heard.

Resorts often use children as an excuse to charge premium prices on the grounds that they need to have special services available to cater to the specific requirements of the children. There are even resorts that would actually charge usurious costs and literally take the mickey out of the poor children's parents, not to mention their wallets. Some of the services they offer children would be daycare facilities, children's entertainment, and since a lot of children are fussy eaters, they may serve special kiddie menus.

But the last half-decade or so has witnessed a sea change as far as the vacation market is concerned. Families no longer have to be a veritable Fort Knox if they wish to go on vacation together and enjoy quality bonding moments. It's a new market and it represents a complete shift in the way we think about our vacation time.

Timeshares, all inclusive resorts, and villa rentals now have to compete with destination clubs, exchange programs, points programs, a wholesale vacation market, and what is now a hugely competitive cottage rental real-estate market. Did you know you can actually rent a cottage and get it as an "all inclusive" package? A decade ago, this would have been a wild and crazy dream, but nowadays, it is reality!

Of course, having a family vacation is not all fun and games, it is also being prepared and planning ahead, and here are a few questions that need to be answered:

What happens if you are hurt while on vacation? Do you have some sort of insurance in the package should you meet such an unfortunate fate? Is your booking or rental guaranteed to be available? What options have you if you are not satisfied with your booking? A refund? Are there any "hidden" charges, such as food, lodging or other sundry costs that are not a part of the rental agreement stipulated?

So long as you keep these simple questions in mind you should have a fun and happy vacation. You deserve to take a break from the hustle and bustle of corporate life with the people that you truly cherish, and that would be your family. Enjoy!
