Festivals and events in Gran Canaria

By Joy Brown

Gran Canaria as a holiday destination is very popular because it has so much to offer. Although it is one of the largest of Spain's Canary Islands, it is still relatively small. Despite this it still has a huge number of different things to do and see all around the island. If you really want to explore the island you can hire a car and get pretty much anywhere in a couple of hours including huge shopping centres and beautiful golden beaches. For a real taste of Gran Canaria you should see which festivals are on during your visit as they are spectacular and will be unlike anything you've seen before.

One of the largest festivals on the island takes place every February. Known simply as the Gran Canaria Carnaval, the celebrations take place all over the island but the biggest happen in Las Palmas. Throughout the carnival there is plenty to experience such as music and dance shows and others like carnival queen. The carnival is one big party and people dress in colourful outfits and take to the streets to sing, dance and have a good time.

St John's day or San Juan is celebrated in Gran Canaria in June. This is a celebration of Las Palmas' history and during this time there are a number of different things to see and do. Most of the events happen outside as of course it is very warm in Gran Canaria and visitors can enjoy theatre, concerts and sporting events all whilst catching some sun too.

The people of Gran Canaria like to party at every opportunity and Senora of the Carmen Festival is no exception. This is one of the most popular festivals and it attracts thousands of people. The streets are filled with amazing, colourful flowers and the island's people and tourists take to the streets to party through the night.

The Fiesta de la Naval in October is a great way to see how the people of Gran Canaria like to do things. Despite a remembrance event, the atmosphere is always a positive one and a maritime parade is accompanied by fantastic fireworks displays and colourful flowers.
