Essential Pre-Travel Tasks

By Robert Nickel

A good start to any vacation is knowing you have left everything at home safe and secure so it will all be intact upon your return. Just to make sure you don't miss anything, begin making a mental list of things everyone in the home does on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Then discuss ways for them with everyone, and decide on ways to take care of it all either before or after the trip. Below are a few examples.

Many families opt for engaging a house sitter while they go on vacation. Most of the time, the person they choose is someone they know or has been recommended by a friend. If this is the case in your family, contact your house sitter as soon as your vacation dates are booked. The same goes for families who have pets needing to be put in a kennel. Book a place at your kennel as soon as possible, especially during the summer. Those spots fill up fast!

Make arrangements for post mail, newspapers and regular package deliveries to be temporarily halted during your vacation. This will help keep your items safely at the shipper and out of the hands of thieves. Plus, newspapers and mail piling up at the front door is a great sign for criminals that your house is empty. If you have house cleaners or landscapers coming on a regular basis, it would be a good idea to suspend their services while away.

Depending on where you are traveling, it will be a good idea to think about what kind of money to bring. Credit cards are always a good bet, and indeed necessary for checking into hotels or renting a vehicle. Then again, there will always be a need for cash in the currency of the nation you are visiting. Budget out the amount of money you think will be needed the first day of travel for incidentals like tipping.

The amount of cash to have on hand really depends upon where you are traveling. Some parts of Mexico will only accept cash, while the resorts will happily charge your credit card. Do some research well before the trip so you know exactly what to bring.

These are the first few things to consider before leaving for vacation, stay tuned for the next few in part two of this series. We will cover subjects like planning the first and last day of the trip, weather, communication and getting around.
