Cape Town has become one of the world's most popular holiday destinations due to its wonderful climate and array of fascinating attractions and activities. It's wonderful, colourful inhabitants and great food and wine culture aid in generating even more visitors to the city each year. Although there are many internationally known attractions that thousands flock to each year, I feel there are a few that get overlooked.
The Iziko South African Art museum is one of my favourites, housing a fabulous permanent collection which includes fine examples of British art and many international leading artists of the early 20th century. In more recent times the gallery has also been focusing a lot on contemporary South African art and houses a great many examples of indigenous art. The Neigbourgoods Market in the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock is a must on a Saturday morning for fabulous coffee, eats and hand made goods. It's true foodie heaven and a great outing for the family.
If you're into dining out, I really recommend visiting Kloof Street and eating at one of the many trendy little eateries that line the street. It's also great for shopping as there are many quirky boutiques and interesting little shops to rummage through. In memory of the countries successful hosting of the World Cup Soccer in 2010, walking the official fan mile all the way to the beautiful Cape Town Stadium is obligatory! If you're lucky, there might be a big star in town and you'll be able to catch a concert at the stadium.
If you're looking for a gorgeous view by night, take a drive up Signal Hill with a bottle of bubbly and enjoy the view of the city. From the top of the hill the stars look so much closer and clearer and this creates a truly romantic setting. It's a favourite spot for locals to propose. If you're on a tight schedule and you'd like to make the most of a short stay, the red city sightseeing busses are great. They work on a hop on hop off system and if you buy a ticket, this allows you to get on and off the bus at will. It stops at all the major attractions and there is a buss every 20 minutes, so this really is a great solution should you be pressed for time.
Taking a leisurely stroll down St George's mall, which is a street completely closed off to traffic, is fun with lots of little stalls with African curios for sale. Here you will really get a taste of the city's true flavor and experience the African vibe. Lastly, don't forget to have a picnic in the historical Company Gardens and feed the squirrels!
