Five Things to Check Out in Rhodes

By Lydia R. Coleman

You've probably heard all about this Greek idyll by now. Rhodes is a real gem for a holiday-goer, whatever their tastes. It gives you the freedom to explore on of the largest Greek Islands, and enjoy a mix of old and new. For people that want to party you need look no further than Faliraki. This hosts one of the best sand beaches in Rhodes (many beaches here are pebble) as well as some amazing clubs. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy it as a family too, as in the daytime the water park and the seafront are the perfect place for fun and play.

In terms of culture the old town of Rhodes city is wonderful. This is one of the best-preserved medieval town centres anywhere, and the fact that it's still used by modern inhabitants only adds to its charm. Head here to get in on some wonderful architecture and museums, and maybe find time for some shopping and drinking in the new sections of the town once you're all cultured-out.

If that hasn't given you enough of a sense of the island's illustrious past you should head to the acropolis. This is only two kilometres away from the modern city of Rhodes, and was the seat of power two thousand years ago. In these days it was famous for the colossus - and amazing stature of the Greek god Helios that towered over the main entrance to the city.

Anfandou is a large village that offers a chance to relax in the countryside and also get in on some top-notch recreation. Head to the golf courses if you feel like you want to work on your swing, or check out the selection of taverns and restaurants that cater to tourists, but offer a lot of local favourites too.

The Castle of Monolithos is a place where many people head during their stay, though not so much to check out the ruins as to feast their eyes on spectacular views. It's also the starting point of many trekking routes, so if you're looking to get active during you need look no further.
