Boat Panama To Colombia Fun Ride

By Colette Foreman

Road travel to Colombia from Panama is not possible because of the Darien Gap that is a break from the highway of Pan-American. Travel by air and water are the only left options. Air travel is fast but is boring for adventure seekers. One of the greatest journeys in the world is a boat Panama to Colombia ride.

The journey is 3 to 5 days long while passing through beautiful islands and white tropical beaches. From your departure point in Panama to San Blas the main departure point may cost you a little. Other departure points are in Colon-Portobello and Puerto Lindo towns that are few kilometers apart. Sailing from San Blas takes approximately 3 days depending on the weather. Making this journey will require you to hire a boat.

Hiring a boat is necessary to make this trip. When hiring, talk to the captain or book through an agency. Also inquire about the small details such as the number of other passengers making the same trip. Remember to get to the departure point on time. In addition, withdraw cash while still in Panama as there are no ATMs along your journey.

Fare paid covers meals taken, taxes and also fees for your departure and arrival. The captain has the responsibility of handling all the immigration issues stamping of the passport. Cash is used to pay the fare to the captain once on board. Once this is done, your luggage is taken away for safe storage. Due to this, pack a separate lighter bag to contain all the essentials you will need for the trip. These essentials may include your toiletries, tees, shorts and sunscreen.

Alcohol may or may not be allowed depending on the rules of the boat. When it is allowed however you have to carry your own. For soft drinks you will also make your own plans. There are special meals for special cases such as diabetes, vegetarians and vegans. However, you have to provide this information beforehand that is during booking. During your trip you may want to try out snorkeling or fishing and the necessary gear is provided.

Before you begin your journey, your captain will inform you of what to do to be safe whilst in the trip. Sailing can be dangerous and lives may be lost. Often there are storms, lack of food, people falling overboard even drunk captains. Do not have too much expectation, just relax and look for ways to have fun.

While on the trip you also get to interact with the locals and learn more about their culture. San Blas Island is inhabited by the Kuna people and they are social, beautiful with a rich culture. Their food is a must try and you should consider buying some of their craft for souvenirs.

When booking your trip ask for the credentials of the captain. Ensure they are licensed and professional and experienced in sailing. The boat too should have safety equipments such as life jackets and GPS trackers. Never go for cheap options blindly. A boat ride to Colombia from Panama is a fun way to travel.
