The Highlights Of Vacations To Peru

By Tabatha Fickel

The sheer size of the country of Peru means there are many options for vacations to Peru. You can find activities and locations that would satisfy your need for something different in a holiday. Check out the cities of Arequipa, Cuzco or Lima when you want an urban setting. For a different type of experience, check out the Pacific beaches, the Andes Mountains and the humid rain forests. You can plan your holiday online to be prepared for the activities and locations you want to enjoy.

Many people don't think of Peruvian lands in terms of rain forests. Manu Wildlife Center is a national reserve which contains palm trees up to 100 feet in height. There are Brazil nut trees which are a cash crop for locals. You can travel by boat down the Madre de Dios River and see giant otters up to four feet long that play in Sandoval Lake. Another animal of interest is the tapir.

The system of Inca Trails facilitated travel between the center and the outreaches of the Inca Empire. Messengers carried goods and information quickly and easily. Today, the tourist who plans in advance may be fortunate enough to travel some of the same trail system that the important Incas used. One well-known tour is the four-day Inca trail that ends at the Gate of the Sun on the final morning. This route runs from Cuzco to Machu Picchu.

If you are at all interested in awesome architectural examples, check out the City of Lima. Take time to visit Basilica of San Francisco. There is also a monastery and convent with a huge library. The catacombs holds bones from early history. With a Spanish Baroque style, the structures are a fine example of architectural design. The library holds some valuable and rare volumes.

Many geography texts mention Lake Titicaca, which is the highest navigable lake in South America. It lies at more than two miles high. The location spans the border between Bolivia and Peru. Visiting this part of Peru is a challenge because of the altitude. Many people will suffer altitude sickness unless there is a slow acclimation period.

If you are a well-toned athlete, you may want to travel by mountain bike from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado. This is not a trip for the weekend biker. You will need to be in good physical condition and have good stamina.

A trek by horseback, using the magnificent and hardy Peruvian Pasos is another way to see the country easily. Pasos are a comfortable horse to ride. In fact, they have been termed "Cadillacs". You can take advantage of a guided tour by horseback into parts of the country that you might have trouble hiking. This is a unique holiday experience that would be hard to replicate anywhere else in the world.

These and other experiences that provide unique and exciting vacations to Peru are available by starting a search online. Regardless of the type of activity you choose, you are sure to find a place in this South American country. Getting to your destination is easy, once you decide where to start your adventure.
