The Facts About Yellowstone Snowmobile Tours

By Carissa Glenn

Yellowstone snowmobile tours offer a unique and exciting opportunity to enjoy the beauty and interest in the National Park during the winter season. Riding a snowmobile provides a different viewpoint of this area than would be possible from an automobile or tour bus. You can view the wildlife, and the many points of interest that are found in and near the Park on comfortable and well-maintained equipment with experienced guides in charge.

There are several departure points for these tours. To some extent, you will decide the departure location based on how far you want to ride, and what amenities you want to be able to access on your trek. There are many points of interest in the Park that appear completely different in the winter than in the summer. The elements that you will want to consider include equipment, amenities, route and required proficiency in riding the machines.

There are groups that come from Jackson Hole, Wyoming or from closer communities such as West Yellowstone. The tour length varies. You can ride for a few miles or can extend your ride over several days with more than one hundred miles in the trek. Some of the longer rides include the Yellowstone Grand Canyon and, of course, Old Faithful. There can be tours that add locations outside the Park as well as inside.

Obviously, the equipment is a key factor in the enjoyment of the ride. A snowmobile is not a toy, but riding one can be a lot of fun. You will want to ensure that the equipment is environmentally friendly. Some tour operators offer machines with heated seats and heated handlebars. A machine that is non-polluting and quiet will allow for a more enjoyable experience. You can expect that the machines are well-maintained and free of obvious defects.

When you are considering which tour is right for you, consider visiting the Grand Canyon. This scenic vista was formed by the river of the same name. This particular route includes views of the Lower and Upper Falls. It leaves from the south entrance and makes a 120 mile long loop through the snowy landscape.

You will want to schedule a visit to Old Faithful during your snowmobile trek. This geyser is the focus of a 90 mile look from the entrance. This tour includes a look at the sights in the Geyser Basin. Wildlife viewing is an extra benefit on each of these passages.

Longer routes include the Grand Canyon, Old Faithful, The Norris Geyser basin and the Canyon Fishing Bridge. Travelers can also see the beauty of Yellowstone Lake and Hayden Valley. This tour is longer than some of the others. It encompasses a 170 mile route through the snow covered landscape. You have the potential for seeing wildlife as well as the tourist sights.

Yellowstone snowmobile tours form the basis of a unique and exciting winter vacation. There are canned tours that may be enough to satisfy some riders. If you want something designed specifically for you and your group, you can arrange for custom four or five day tours.
