Exceptional Mauritius Vacation Basics

By William Ryan

On the web you will find comprehensive details on almost every town and hotel in Mauritius and so it can be really tedious to build up a fundamental concept of exactly what you want to do or where you want to go. This article will give you Mauritius "in a nutshell" so that you can successfully decide what type of vacation you would like to have.

When you arrive you will land in the only flight terminal on the island, called Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Flight terminal. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, also known as "father of the country" was a statesman political leader and philanthropist.

Your Mauritius Holidays therefore begins in an airport devoted to a great man. From there you can take the M2 that crosses the island which will lead you into the more densely populated areas. You will arrive in Curepipe and a bit further down in Rose Hills, which is the 3rd largest town in Mauritius. It's a great idea to spend over for one night in this area and take pleasure in some vibrant nightlife and shopping.

The first towns you come across are located inland and not on the beach. Topographically the island is extremely intriguing as it's formed from a volcano and so inland you will see incredible dark mountains that shoot up from emerald green vegetation. The main plateau is heavily inhabited and the district is called Plaine Wilhelms. Apart from the towns pointed out before, you can also see Beau Bassin, Vacoas and Phoenix.

Carrying further along the M2, with the airport still at your back, you will eventually arrive on the opposite coastline where you will discover the capital city Port Louis. If you are visiting the country in between April and November, you mustn't miss out on visiting the Champ de Mars Racecourse that receives over thirty thousand visitors daily. The really nice thing about the racecourse is that locals and travelers get to meet and freely speak with each other with the shared interest of winning the next race! Apart from the horse races, you will delight in the open air markets that smells of spices, the rebuilt harbor, the Royal Botanical Garden, the Government House and the Blue Penny Gallery.

Once in Port Louis you can choose whether you would like an extremely nature oriented vacation or something a little more "touristy". If you go north you will wind up in Grand Baie and Grand Gaube, if you go south you will not encounter any big towns and will mostly enjoy private beach chalets.

Heading north, you can stop in Le Pouce Nature Reserve, and then go and see the beautiful town of Pamplemousses. Here it will be worthwhile to go to the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens. From there it's a quick drive to Grand Baie or Grande Gaube, where you will find some excellent luxury hotels, resorts, dining establishments, beaches and nightlife. Make sure you get to see some Sega Dance, which is the traditional dance of the native people.

Grande Baie is fully geared up for any sorts of water sports and so you can delight in windsurfing, water-ski, para-sailing and snorkeling in the reefs. The sea is very warm and calm here because of the coral reefs. You can likewise go for a submarine trip to see the reefs from a new point of view and the shipwrecks. This is a really remarkable experience!

If you would like something a lot more quiet and private though, you can head south and stop off at the Baie du Tamarin, which is internationally acclaimed as the optimal surfing spot. Also there is a sensational nature reserve inland, the Black River Gorges National Parkwhere you will be able to see the Pink Pigeon, the Mauritius Kestrel and the Mauritius Fody.

So, Mauritius in a nutshell? Land in the airport and take the only highway that crosses the island up until you reach the opposite coastline, then go north for the resorts and night life or south for a remote surf vacation with nature walks.
