While many South America Vacation Destinations focus on the beautiful beaches, this continent has many other features to offer. Breathtaking mountain scenery abounds along with the opportunity to discover ancient architecture and nature. Regardless of one's travel plans, the trip is guaranteed to be memorable.

Machu Picchu, located in Peru was the center of the Incan Empire. The Incas built stone cities without the benefit of concrete and networks of roads crossing the Andes Mountains. Hire a guide to lead you along the ancient trek from Cuzco to Machu Picchu, one of the great mountain strongholds. Along this trail you will see some of the most breathtaking views imaginable.

Jau National Park, Brazil is remote, vast beyond comprehension and very delicate. The Amazon is one of the world's last frontiers and disappearing at an alarming rated. Jau National Park is a rain forest that is constantly wet and home to fish, dolphins, crocodiles, birds monkeys, turtles, jaguars, insects and turtles. Galapagos Islands claimed by the Republic of Ecuador in 1832 and visited by Darwin only three years later. Rio de Janeiro, one of the oldest cities in the Americas was founded as a Portuguese fortification to protect trade routes from French Pirates. Today, there is a perpetual Carnival atmosphere in the city that is home to the beautiful Copacabana beach. The city has a reputation for a higher crime rate, so visitors will want to take precautions but should never shy away.

Peten Region, Guatemala is accessible by direct international flights to Flores. Visitors can enjoy the cobblestone streets and visit many Mayan ruins. It is a safe alternative for visitors. Lake Peten Itza or a tour the caves of Ak'tun Kan are excellent choices to cool off on steamy summer days. Be sure to try some of the local habanero chile salsa. In all likelihood, you will want to take some home.

Salar de Uyuni is Earth's largest salt flat and covers thousands of square Kilometers. A hotel made of nothing but salt provides a place for visitors to sleep. The location is quite desolate and many consider it to be like a moon walk without leaving earth. It belongs among the South America Vacation Destinations travelers should consider for their journey.
