Be Careful Phony Police With These Tactics

By Cornelius Nunev

Are you prepared if you're ever pulled over by someone who promises to be a cop, but actually is not? It's a scary scenario. Here are a few common-sense suggestions for dealing with phony Highway Patrol officers.

Can you tell if it is fake?

If you think the cop might be fraudulent, look at the car he or she is driving. Any of the following could be driven: Ford Crown Victoria sedan; Chevy Impala, Malibu or Lumina sedans; unmarked Camaro Z28s; Chevy Tahoe SUV; or Dodge Charger. This is the first step.

This is supposed to not be your only indicator considering consumers can purchase these automobiles as well as old police vehicles that are no longer getting used. An individual can go to police supply stores to get every little thing from uniforms to IDs to things to dress up a police automobile to make it look real.

Think about what is going on

Start thinking about your situation when you see the police lights flashing behind you. In case you are a female driver all by yourself in the middle of nowhere and have not done anything wrong, you may want to be careful or avoid pulling over. In addition try and determine if you have done anything wrong.

Pull over and keep the doors locked with windows barely cracked in case you are worried about the policeman. Also, try to pull over in well-lit public areas. If that is not possible, be very careful. If a Highway Patrol official is not in uniform, ask for credentials. Additionally you have the legal right to ask the officer to call another officer to the scene in case you are nervous about this. Legitimate officers will make the call because they have to.

Be ready to escape

If the officer balks at your request for ID and back-up, then resorts to less than professional threats or violent behavior, be ready to make a quick escape. Tell the official you are uncomfortable with the situation and will follow him to the nearest police station. If he continues to object - and you also have a mobile phone - call 911 right away. Tell the operator what's taking place and ask them to confirm whether the officer is legitimate. Stay on the line and most likely, one of three things will happen: he'll wait until his identity is confirmed he'll flee the scene or try to get at you.

If he is intending to get at you, start the car and drive away as easily as possible. Make sure you tell the 911 operator every little thing you can about the officer to keep others from experiencing a problem like you had.
