Tourism Guide Qualification and Trainings just for the Whale Shark Season

By Linda Patterson

In the Island of Women in Quintana Roo Mexico or also known as Isla Mujeres the travel service providers are required to submit proof of training so that they can obtain their new credentials.

The last day to update and renew the guides' credentials to be able to swim by and observe the whale shark was last May 8 as reported by the Isla Mujeres Department of Tourism.

The renewal process was commenced a couple of days before the start of the sighting season of the whale sharks. Such process was started in order to complete the correct guiding documentation which must indicate the hours of training and to fulfill the work requirements through the 2012 season.

A proof of 160 hours of training classes should be submitted by the tour guides so as to obtain the credentials and become whale shark permit holders.

Furthermore, they need to present original and copy of their guiding credential, original and copy of proof of refresher courses, original and copy of a medical certificate and proof of first aid and CPR courses, and color photographs of passport sizes with white background.

The invitation to obtain such license was extended by the Tourism Board so that guides can take this opportunity as well as take all the needed documentation to renew their permits because it will be the last chance to obtain them.

The Opening of Marine Development Is a Threat to the Whale Sharks

The marine development is seen to be a great threat to the gentle giants of the sea.

A specialist said that the Marina Esperanto's opening or the so called nautical development project which seeks to build a more than 1 km long tourist marina from the hotel to Coromuel, in Bahia La Paz poses a serious threat to the life of the whale sharks.

Deni Ramirez Macias, a Mexican whale shark specialist noted that the whale shark is one of the important matters to consider when building the marine. He also said that the moment the marine is in its full operation, a greater number of vessels will be present in the area which will increase accidents and pose threats to the largest fish of the world.
