Outdoor Survival Kits For Safe Wilderness Trekking

By Melissa Brooks

Survival skills in the wilderness can vary from anything as simple as keeping dry in a storm, to the complexity or knowing how to send distress signals when you are lost. Before heading out into the wild you should be confident enough that if such a situation arises that you are stranded and unable to ask for help you can survive over night without any danger to you or your health. Your survival in the wild of course does not just depend on your wilderness skills. It also relies heavily on you having packed all the essential equipment you need to stay a night out wild in your outdoor survival kits.

Before you head out you must have a well stocked survival kit for emergencies. But you do not want to be carrying around an extremely heavy backpack. So, what must you take and what are the essential items. You will find lists online, and they will always contain the same basic information. No survival kit should be without a knife, rope, a tarpaulin, and a first aid kit. You should also never go hiking without energy snacks and a good supply of water.

Carrying a water bottle with you is perhaps the most essential of all survival skills in the wilderness. With just water you can remain hydrated for not one night but for many consecutive nights should the need arise.

But, it's not just about what you put in your survival kit. You also need to know how to use the items you take such as your knife and rope. With just a tarpaulin and a rope and knife you can make a shelter or repair a rip or hole in a tent. You can also secure your body as you climb. A good knife should be multipurpose, and you should know how to use all parts of it, as well as knowing how to tie a knot.

If you have set out for a day but were unable to turn back due to adverse weather conditions, you will need to stay dry and warm. With little more than a tent and your clothes this can be a hard task, especially if it is raining. The best way to stay warm is to light a fire. To do this efficiently you will need to know how to use the knife that you packed.

Starting a fire in the rain can be a trying process, when everything around you is wet, and it is windy as well. Here, once again, your emergency tarpaulin will come into play, allowing you to keep dry and get your fire started away from the wind and rain.

Part of the thrill of wilderness camping and hiking is the feeling you are going out into the unknown. However, a wilderness trip can often turn into a nightmare when you do not have the essential kit you need with you.

You can learn a lot by looking online and you can also practise making knots at home. You can also check out how to use your knife and watch videos on lighting fires, making shelters, and much more. When you go truly prepared out into the wild, you'll not be risking your own life, or the lives of others that would have to come and save you if you went unprepared and needed an emergency rescue.
