Important Facts About New York IRP Registration

By Joseph King

Today, many places are linked by extensive road systems. These systems pass through many jurisdictions each with different rules and regulations governing their transport systems. Given that this infrastructure is put up to support business and other economic activities, it is important to come up with a common agreement between different jurisdictions so as simplify business. This helps many transport companies, big and small, to carry out business in the easiest way possible. The New York IRP registration is one such agreement.

There exists an International Plan between jurisdictions including District of Columbia, the states within Continental United States and Canadian Provinces. It oversees the registration of commercial trucks that are operating in any of the covered jurisdictions. It allows the sharing of this expansive road network with ease as well as promoting business and trade. The main customer counter is located in Albany, NY.

Any individual wishing to enter their vehicle in this agreement must register and pay a fee. This can be done in any of the respective jurisdiction preferably one in which they reside or conduct business from. The person is then issued a certificate, cab cards and apportionment plates. The cab cards are usable at any place within the jurisdiction covered. They list the places that fall within the agreement. Fees paid are distributed accordingly using an apportionment system. This sees the larger amount go to the area that recorded the highest fleet miles.

All commercial trucks have qualified for registration done at the Albany, NY office. These are hired to carry goods and people. They must be operating in different jurisdictions that fall in the agreement. Power units also are included provided they carry weight in pounds more than twenty six thousand or have a number of axels.

If a vehicle does fall into the above category but does not register with the International Registration Bureau must buy trip permits to go into a different jurisdiction. Many other vehicles are exempted from this plan. These are recreational cars, pickup and delivery vehicles for the city, cars owned by government agencies, trailers as well as buses carrying transport chartered parties.

Requirements used in registration are the same as those used by the state. The owner should provide a proof of ownership, proof of insurance as well as proof of personal identity and birth date. This process is easily done by mail. All correspondence should be addressed to the office in Albany, NY. It could also be done by personally taking applications.

Renewals are done regularly. The customer counter office will send a mail report nearly ninety days before the expiration date. All renewals require fees payment at least twenty days prior to the expiration date. This ensures that one receives their renewed documents early before the status expires. All mail renewal documents and applications must be sent forty-five days before expiration. It is also possible to go to renew documents at the office physically.

There is an option to transfer the credentials of one truck to another if the latter is purchased to serve the same route. It is not necessary to get new registration. This process is done at the main office or through mail correspondence.
