The Popularity Of Haida Gwaii Adventure Tours And Travel Packages

By Sharron Cantu

As time goes by, many interesting places get discovered by people for them to have vacations at. Lately there has been a growing trend in visiting the islands of Haida Gwaii off the north coast of British Columbia. Many have booked plenty of Haida Gwaii adventure tours and travel packages for themselves and their families.

As Haida Gwaii is an island chain, it would be naturally expected that water activities and water related activities abound. One of the more popular water related activities is the whale watching available year round in the area.

Being in the most strategic area for whale watching, one will be able to see different species of whales up close. Depending on the season for month, one can see humpbacks, killer whales and gray whales. It is best to research this further or ask around from the locals the best schedules to see certain specific species for your tours and enjoyment.

Plenty can be done on the islands as well. There is plenty of hiking and camping to be had, and a bit of mountain biking as well on the many trails found in the islands. And fishermen will find plenty to do In the many streams that also are full of kayaking possibilities. Many more experienced travelers actually do the hiking and mountain biking in the morning, and spend the later half of the day soaking up the sand on the beaches and just relax until the sun goes down.

One can have the chance to learn more about the local populace and the culture as well. The local Haida are very friendly and easy to get along with. They are more than willing to talk to you and share with you their local heritage and customs.

On some islands are erected totem poles as a record of history and as a testament to posterity to each of the families living on the islands. One who is well travelled may likely notice that the totem poles have a remarkable similarity to those also erected in the Alaskan region. This is because the Haida also inhabit large portions of Alaska and surrounding areas, and thus their culture is very much widespread in these areas.

Should one really want to immerse fully in the local culture by visiting each and every community on the islands, the trip will roughly take around four days or so to complete. While doing so you can also accentuate your experience by visiting the various crafts workshops and museums that dot the islands. Here you will notice the beginnings and origins of the bent wood technique that is very much a specialty and characteristic of the Haida and many related people.

Being just two hours by plane from Toronto, the Haida Gwaii archipelago is very accessible. It is close enough for anyone to reach by plane but far enough for one to get off the beaten track. Apart from air travel, one can also reach the archipelago by ferry or boat as well.
