Haida Gwaii Tours For Your Next Vacation

By Essie Osborn

A good vacation can never be beat, especially if it is something new and novel. Many of us who have tried vacations over and over again soon get sick of it. However, there is a little known secret place in British Columbia that is fast gaining in popularity as a vacation destination. Many are now booking Haida Gwaii tours and travel packages to see what this archipelago has to offer.

The weather can be described as great on the archipelago. The summers are not very hot and the winters are not very cold. This makes it ideal for a lot of varied outdoor activities. Originally called the Queen Charlotte islands, it was renamed back to Haida Gwaii in deference and respect to its locals, the name literally meaning island of the Haida. One will find them a very friendly and accommodating people when one makes a visit.

As the Haida also occupy quite a lot of Alaska, one may find similarities also in their crafts and wares. Here you will also find totem poles that are records of family histories and also workshops that has the unique bent wood technique used by peoples indigenous to the region.

Should one want a cultural experience it is best to reserve at least four days for this to really cover all the communities. This is also enough time to cover the museum and little workshops and curios shops one will find on the way.

For the avid hiker there is plenty of hiking to be found. However, if you want a thorough walk of the entire archipelago you should have on hand at least a kayak also since you will be going over water now and again. Several packages which cater to the pure hiking experience are available.

Those who want to see whales up close could not have picked a better location to do so. This area is world renowned for close up viewing of gray whales, killer whales and humpbacks. You can avail of the many tour packages dedicated to this kind of adventure once you get on the islands.

The less physically endowed can still enjoy also however. There are plenty of areas for less strenuous activities like camping, fishing or just plain chilling out and enjoying nature. Thus one need not feel left out even if one does not want to do physically demanding activities.

Accommodations wise there are quite a few bed and breakfasts around and also lodges. There is also available an RV park for those who want to travel and vacation this way. However, one should not go during the summer season as rates can get quite high, unless you want to of course. Therefore you should plan accordingly to avoid the crowds and the prices.

Being only two hours by plane from Vancouver, and about seven hours by sea or boat, this destination cannot be beat due to proximity. Near enough for one to travel but far enough to be isolated, this is one holiday destination that is getting popular and would be hard to beat.
