By Pammy McGrath

There are many reasons to consider a move to the picturesque hamlet that is Fredericksburg, Texas. Surrounded by the beauty of Texas Hill Country, this town of about 9,000 residents offers a small town ambiance with close access to San Antonio and Austin. Throughout the year, the city and surrounding towns offer an abundance of events and activities for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Fredericksburg has been a city since 1846, and its downtown historic district is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In the center of downtown, you will find the quaint market square, which is known as the Markplatz, a reminder of the town's German heritage. An excellent farmer's market is set up here on Thursdays from May to August. Among the stalls, you will find locally grown lavender, produce from local farms and ranches, as well as offerings from the local wineries and restaurants.

Within the downtown area, there are nearly one dozen art galleries, which team up together to host the First Friday Art Walks. You can enjoy browsing through the galleries, and many of the galleries provide samples of wines grown at nearby wineries. The galleries are all within easy walking distance of each other and many are clustered on Main Street.

German culture is celebrated often in Fredericksburg and, of course, there is an annual Oktoberfest. In addition to being able to sample an abundance of delectable beers, one can enjoy the live music, take the kids to the children's fun area or shop for arts and crafts. There are also plenty of delicious German foods to enjoy. The highlight of the event is the annual chicken dance. Hundreds of participants line Main Street and engage in this popular yearly dance event.

For families with kids, the town offers some exciting seasonal events. There is a yearly egg hunt and the Pioneer Museum, which is fun for a visit anytime. The town has a yearly fireworks show and parade to commemorate the Fourth of July. Christmas in Fredericksburg also is quite special with a tree lighting ceremony and the lighting of a German Christmas pyramid, which is a beautiful site.
