Satellite Television Comparison - Is Directv Or Dish Network The Best?

By Brian Stevens

At first the two major satellite television service providers - Dish Network and Directv - seem to be fairly similar. Yet start looking just a little closer and I believe you will discover there are a number of difference. Here is what they are..

Program Services

DIRECTV features 265 satellite TV channels, while DISH Network has got 320 channels. Dish Network provides 320 channels, DirecTV has 265 television channels. The satellite television channels from both of these service providers offer a variety of categories which includes movies, news, sporting events, variety shows, network programming, weather, reality programs, special interest programs as well as international channels.

DIRECTV rates start at $29.99 per month for 150 channels, which includes local channels - ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, along with the CW channel. Program rates for Dish Network begin at $24.95 for 190 channels including your local channels including NBC, CBS, FOX, and also ABC.

Movie Channels

Both Dish Network and DirecTV give you a total of 31 movie channels which includes Starz, Cinemax, Showtime, and HBO. Package prices start at $13 monthly for Showtime Cinemax, and Starz, and go up to $16 monthly for HBO.

Streaming Video Service

Streaming videos are the latest technological advance in satellite TV programming. Streaming video service gives you access to online movies, TV shows, and games that you can watch on your television, cell phone, computer, or tablet pc. DirecTV has 10,000 steaming videos and Dish Network has 25,000 streaming videos.

DIRECTV and DISH Network Pay-Per-View

With pay-per-view you could have a newly released movie sent to your receiver so can view a movie without having to stop at a video store to have it. DIRECTV offers 60 motion pictures a month, plus sporting events plus special attractions, with fees beginning at $3.99 per movie. DISH Network features 75 motion pictures per month, in addition to sports plus special attractions, with rates beginning at $3.99 for each movie.

Satellite Radio stations Plus Music Services

With DIRECTV you can get 9 Sonic Tap music channels together with 56 XM satellite radio channels. With DISH Network you can get 64 SiriusXM satellite radio stations together with 52 music channels. All the radio and music programs from the two providers are broadcast in digital audio giving you a clear, rich sound, and programs are actually commercial free.

Satellite Television Products

DIRECTV offers a free satellite system in up to 4 rooms in your home as well as free installation of that system once you purchase their service, while DISH Network gives a free satellite TV system installed in as many as 6 rooms of your home after you order their service. You will have the option of getting a free high definition receiver from either company, so you can view your TV shows in high def, or a free digital video recorder receiver so that you can record your programs. You can even get a combination HD/DVR receiver.

Customer Care

Both DIRECTV and DIRECTV feature totally free customer support via telephone, email, and Internet chat support round the clock 7 days a week, so you can get support when it's needed.

In Conclusion

There is very little difference in quality between DIRECTV's satellite TV equipnent and DISH Network's satellite equipment, but, personally, I find that DISH Network's program guide is much easier to operate, and their remote control is a bit more convenient to use.

When it comes to programming, DIRECTV offers the most sports channels, which includes the popular NFL Sunday Ticket, while DISH Network offers the most movies, music, international channels, and pay-per-view movies.

DIRECTV has got 160 hi-def channels, while DISH Network has 200 hi-def channels.

If you'd like the most variety, the most high-def programming, along with the most pay-per-view movies and events for the very best price, then DISH Network will be your smartest choice. If sporting events is your thing, then you'll probably want to get DIRECTV.
