Holiday Mount Wellington Tasmania

By Anton Maverick

Mount Wellington offers a particularly inspiring background to Hobart, Tasmania and is highly well liked by neighbors and visitors alike. One special featuret about Mount Wellington is that it's so close to Hobart. You can have a badlands experience roughly twenty minutes from Tasmania's capital.

It is often known as the windiest spot in Hobart so take a warm coat. It's also 4,000 feet above sea level and supplies the most incredibly fabulous views of Hobart. If you're in Tasmania, Mount Wellington should be on the 'must do ' list. If you're driving around Tasmania, Campervan Hire Australia is always a great choice and you can drive to the summit.

The drive to the top is 21 kilometres and you'll pass thru temperate rainforest on the way up, ending with rock formations formed by glaciers ages ago. Some people like to hike up to the top and if this appeals to you, please enjoy. There's an interpretative centre at the very top as well as viewing platforms for all directions.

One impressive view is to the south, where you can see one of Tasmania's World Heritage Areas. An engaging piece of information about Mount Wellington, is that the road up to the top was constructed at the same time as the Sydney Harbor Bridge, in the Great Depression in the early 1930's. You can look right over the top of Hobart and far into the distance as well.

Mountain activities are available, such as bush walking, abseiling and trail bike riding. There is also a cycle descent, commercially operated, which solemnly contains a stop at the Cascade Brewery. Mount Wellington also has many pretty springs and is often snow capped. Hobart's drinking water also comes from Mount Wellington. A visit to the top of Mount Wellington is time well spent and if you're a seasoned bush walker, you could easily spend all day exploring.
