Though a snowy, cold, frost-ridden winter has its place, when you are treated with one every single year it can get a little wearing. And when you consider how much it costs just to stay warm at times like these, buying warm drinks, central heating, as well as all the knitwear, it may seem an attractive alternative to just travel somewhere warm for the winter. Fuerteventura is a great place to go for this.
It is the second largest island in the Canary islands, which is a volcanic archipelago situated just to the northwest of Africa, and is subject to a warm and sunny climate all year round, making it a great place for escaping the cold. Any one of its 150 glorious beaches, ranging from pure white to shimmering gold sands are a paradise from the cold. And all of the beaches have waters that are bright in colour, but clear and clean. Spending a winter on these beaches may make you even forget what winter is.
But if you are looking for more of an active holiday, then there are plenty of things for you too. The northern shore of the island gets some great trade winds and so is a great place to try your hand at surfing, whether you are a professional, or a beginner; windsurfing is also another popular option because of the unique conditions on this island. The stretches of sand dunes on the island are also spectacular, and well worth exploring either by foot or by sand buggy.
Alternatively there are plenty of restaurants and bars to visit, where you can sit outside in the long warm evenings and enjoy some of the spectacular cuisine, or a nice long cocktail. You will feel like you've gotten away with something when you see one of the islands glorious sunsets, while enjoying a meal and a drink, remembering that it's November!
Where back in colder countries most of the wildlife hides away during winter months, there is still plenty to see on Fuerteventura; this includes a wide variety of fauna and flora that you can find nature reserves. There is an interestingly high biodiversity on the island, especially of insects; the amount of species of beautiful butterflies on the island is staggering.
