It's always been an issue for us on who gets lost often between my husband and me. We're barely equal, well that's what I think. We're spontaneous and when we fill we wanted to go anywhere, we just fill the car with stuff and zoom off.But on those occasions that we have to find a client's office, or a specific location in a city we don't know, it is challenging at best. On one occasion, we'd gone astray in a major city and appeared in part of a town that was unsafe. We then bought the following day a GPS device that will help keep track of our destination, for the purpose of security that is.
GPS stands for Global Positioning System. Originally, this system was created by the American Department of Defense and run with 24 satellites.Today, there are about 30 active satellites transmitting signals used in nautical navigation, aviation, land surveying, or anything that requires an exact position.
The equipment and know-how on satellite navigation was already employed by the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy in 1973. Further developments were then based from there. At first, the chief purpose of the GPS concept was to provide the U.S. military resources from precise directions through the radio, that is what the National Research Council's Committee on the future of the GPS stated. With the advances in our technology, considerable number of ordinary people are now using it, more than what is used by the military. Noted for its excellence in the 1991 Gulf War, this was the time when the GPS system was presented publicly for the first time.
Now, in the civilian sector, it is helping save lives, helping society in various ways and providing jobs. The advances in this technology are taking big leaps. It is even foreseen to evolve into a size similar to a credit card. There'll be no reason for you to get lost!
GPS systems also have important functions in aiding rescues, public transportations, and aerial flight procedures. Earthquakes and movements in the tectonic plates have also been the subject of the GPS monitoring.
Ordinary people find it most useful in road navigation next to road mapping, forest fire monitoring and improving aerial navigation. Many companies are manufacturing cars equipped with a GPS system, but if you don't have one in your car, you can purchase a system and install it yourself.
This is just the tip of the iceberg, since the global market for GPS receivers and systems is estimated at more than two billion dollars and growing with expectations of over thirty billion dollars in the next ten years.
My husband and I are now at ease that we have this GPS to direct us when we're off to see our customer at his/her place and we'd still be on schedule, or in case there's an emergency, we would easily be found, or if we get lost, we could just redirect ourselves with the GPS to find our way back. Sure, sometimes we just go on spontaneous trips on the road.We just get in the car and go, and wherever we decide to stop is okay with us. Although, we do feel secure that we'd never go astray because we have the GPS to bring us back home.
