Points To Consider When Camping In Maine

By Joyce Ellis

Many people when thinking of a holiday or weekend break will decide to pack up and go camping in Maine. This kind of vacation is extremely popular due to the fact you are not tied to fixed accommodation and have a little more freedom. Before you pick up your camping gear or take to the road in a motor home you should do a little homework first.

When you have decided on the area you want to stay in, you will need to find a site that has the facilities you will need. You can find campsites listed in phone books and camping magazines which is a good place to start. There are now many sites that are listed on the internet and this can be a good place to do some research before you hit the road.

There are also many clubs that operate which are operated by camping enthusiasts and these are well worth joining. They will have large lists of approved sites which have been vetted and passed inspection. You may also get a discount on your bookings by being a member of the club and you will meet other campers in a social environment.

Most of the sites will require you to make a booking in advance to let them know how long you will be staying. There are exceptions where you can just turn up and hope to get a pitch but it is advisable to make a reservation to avoid being turned away. If you intend to stay for a while then some discounts are often available after negotiating with the site managers or owners.

You will find that every campsite is different and they will all have things to offer that will suit varying tastes. Many will just be a field with basic facilities or an open space where tents can be pitched or motor homes parked. Other sites will be much larger and fully equipped with pools, club houses and golf courses and which cater more for families.

Many of the bigger sites in Old Orchard Beach, ME will target families and will have some useful facilities for you to use. There will be activity clubs, baby sitting services and other things to keep the young ones happy. If you have special requirements for children such as cots or high chairs the sites will be happy to help if they can.

A lot of the sites will have extra facilities that you may find useful, especially of you are travelling with the family. Electric is available to hook up to, phone lines and internet access which are on a pay as you go basis. For the campers who are staying in tent there will be wash rooms and toilet blocks and you may also have a laundry on site.

When you are due to leave the campsite there are some things that you need to do before you head home. Always clean away any rubbish and leave your pitch the way that you found it on arrival. If you have enjoyed your stay, it is useful to leave a review on the testimonial section of the sites web page, and this will help them attract new business and help other guests to select a place to stay.
