How To Make A Decorating Statement With Unique Window Treatments

By Liliana Mills

There are many different things involved in home decorating. One is the design and styles used for windows. Standard designs, as well as customized ones, are available in area stores. For those who want to make a personal, however, unique window treatments are one good way to do that. They give a look that no other homeowner has, giving a very personal look to the decorating style.

There are a number of ways to decorate windows. These include blinds, draperies, curtains, and different styles of fabric screens. Cornice boards are another way to make a personal statement. The look can either be formal or casual. Colors may be monochromatic or complementary, or even harmonizing colors near each other on the color wheel. Whatever the style, color is one way to make an individual statement.

Design statements are made in fabric choices as well, whether a solid or print is chosen. Plaids and stripes are just part of the choices available. Combining them with interesting construction methods like pleats or gathers will give a totally different look. Even is designs are limited, combining them with different styles and colors gives a totally individual look. Cornice boards can be print in combination with solid panels, or vice versa. Another person might use a solid cornice and print panels.

There are wooden, acrylic, and fabric blinds. Slats can be vertical or horizontal. Fabric blinds can be Roman style or ones that roll up and down. Acrylics are available in many different colors, from bright, bold ones to deep, rich ones. Even soft pastels are available. Whether a fun-loving color or a more formal one, they give light control and insulate for temperature as well.

Embellishments also add design features that make individual looks. There are beads, bows, or other baubles. If such is not your style, there are fringes and rope tie backs. These often use blended hues, but can also be contrasted in hue to add a special look. Embroidery is another detail that is used for many looks. Adding lace sheers or other layers under the main layer can change a look completely.

The style decisions depend not only on personal taste, but on room functions as well. Though an individual can choose not to use traditional designs for, say a kitchen or bathroom, normally the different rooms will be taken into consideration when styles are chosen. Heavily pleated draperies might look good in the formal living room, but not so much in a family room, or a kitchen.

An individual's home is very personal to them. They each have their own ideas about what they like in interior design. They have ideas about color, style, and function that has to be considered when making design decisions. They must make their own decisions. Even though professionals do help by advising and guiding the homeowner, the ultimate decision is theirs alone.

Unique window treatments are an important part of design, but they are not the only thing to consider. Being careful in choosing design elements and styles will mean a greater chance of satisfaction in choices. This is important in a person's home for personal satisfaction.
