Some Options For Midway Airport Transportation

By Rena Hudson

Chicago is a major travel destination for tourists and businesspeople alike. It is also one of the largest cities in the country and sees a significant volume of residents of the city itself and the surrounding areas traveling elsewhere every day. There are two international airports that serve the city: O'Hare and Midway. The former is the better-known one but the latter is seeing more and more visitors all the time. For those whose travels bring them through here, it is good to be aware of the many options that exist for Midway Airport transportation.

Going by car is one option to get to the south side airport. Nearby Interstate 55 is the most-often used way to get there. From areas of the city north of the airport, simply make your way to I-55 and the Cicero Avenue South exit will lead you straight there. Southbound Interstate 294 is the best way to get to I-55 from the northern suburbs while northbound I-294 will take you there from areas to the south. From the western suburbs, Interstate 88 will lead you to I-294 South in order to get to I-55.

There are lots for short-term and for long-term parking surrounding the airport. Departing and arriving passengers may be dropped off and picked up at the terminal but waiting curbside is not permitted. When waiting for an incoming passenger it is advised to use the cell phone lot that is located just minutes away from the terminals.

Those who prefer different means of transport have a number of other choices. One convenient and economical option is to go or come via the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) trains, which are referred to locally as The El. The Orange Line goes between Midway and downtown Chicago. Service begins at 4 am and continues until 1 am daily.

Taxis are a more expensive but also more convenient option. They are generally readily available throughout the city and at the airport for arriving passengers.

Several shuttle services also serve various locations in and around Chicago. Different companies go to different areas so it's wise to inquire as to which is the proper one for where you are going. Many hotels in Chicagoland offer shuttle services for guests as well.

Regional buses are a viable alternative for anyone traveling to and from places farther away. Other locations in Illinois as well as parts of Wisconsin, Indiana and Iowa have this type of bus service.

There are three main options for passengers who are transferring between Midway and O'Hare. If using a shuttle or taxi, you should allow a minimum of one hour for the trip. The CTA recommends allowing two hours when using their trains.

The options for Midway Airport transportation are numerous and varied. There should be no problem in finding a suitable way to get to and from your destination in or around Chicago.
