Ensuring That Long Island Fishing Charters Are Rewarding

By Dorothea Garner

Many fishermen believe that people become friendlier and calmer when they fish, which makes fishing a sociable experience in which friends can be made. It's possible to charter a boat for a group of friends, or to take a trip with strangers. Captains have the experience and knowledge necessary to help consumers to have a more successful trip. Licences aren't required of individuals, since chartered boats have licences that cover those who hire them. Long Island fishing charters are a wonderful way to relax, socialize and learn more about one's hobby.

The oceans off New York's coast line are highly populated with striped bass. The highest numbers can be found in long Island. Specific bait is required to catch this species. It's possible to use chum as well as flounder lures. Petri fish are often used because they imitate flounders' movements, and thus work to catch bass.

Shark fishing is possible off New York's coastlines. Anglers should have a good idea about the ethics and laws pertaining to this kind of angling. There are endangered species that must be thrown back. The dusky shark is one such species. Great whites are allowed to be caught but they must be released thereafter by law.

New York's waters are strictly regulated so that anglers are legally forced to release fish that are too young. Species are regulated in terms of number and minimum length. Bluefish are not regulated, but blackfish, flounders and the majority of other species are strictly controlled. These can only be kept if they exceed a certain length.

It's legal to catch tiger sharks, hammerheads and Nurse Sharks on the New York coast. Only one shark may be kept per vessel. Species that may not be caught by law include Galapagos, Narrowtooth, sand tiger and Caribbean reef sharks. Anglers are legally allowed to catch a limited number of lobsters and crabs. White sharks can only be legally caught using a rod and reel, and in such a way as to cause minimum injury to the fish. The fish should not be taken out of the water.

A charter is more enjoyable when one is properly prepared. Clothing to suit diverse conditions should be taken to keep one comfortable during extreme weather changes. Boats don't always provide food and drink, so anglers should take their own refreshments. Boating shoes with good traction are useful to keep anglers stable whilst they fish.

There are a range of trip lengths consumers can choose from. Some boats go out for full days whilst others offer shorter trips. Food and drink are not always provided, so anglers should take snacks and drinks with them. Deep sea angling can cause sea sickness, so visitors should take anti-emetics a few hours before they leave. Ginger ale and dry crackers are useful additions for sea sickness.

Novice fishermen are able to charter boats without the necessity of gaining skills and equipment. Crew members are there to educate beginners so that their trip is successful. When embarking on Long Island fishing charters, rods and reels are provided. One only needs to be prepared in terms of clothing, medication and food.
