Winter Canaries Holidays Versus European Summer Getaways

By Steve Alexander

The traditional time to take holidays abroad is in the summer time but huge numbers of tourists can be found simultaneously descending on the beaches at this time making it difficult to find space to relax. Millions of British holidaymakers head off to beautiful coastal locations around the Mediterranean and because of this hotel and flight prices are driven up by demand.

If you're looking to avoid the summer crowds, Canaries holidays in the winter are a great solution despite the fact the options for a beach break are limited when the sun drops in the sky. The islands are located on the North African coast so are hot in the summer but but stay warm in the winter.

Resorts in Lanzarote, for example, are an ideal place to shake off the winter blues. Though low-rise white-washed resorts like Costa Teguise are popular for family holidays in the summertime, the best time to visit is out of season. The sun is still shining but the island becomes a serene retreat with the water still warm enough for a refreshing dip.

One big advantage of taking a summer holiday is the sheer choice of sun-drenched Mediterranean beach destinations and many European resorts close down for the cooler months. Some of the best places to take a summer holiday can be found in Portugal's Algarve, the Spanish Costas, Turkey's Turquoise Coast and Greece's diverse islands. A trip could be significantly more expensive than in winter though and you might find that hotels are booked up quicker and you'll find yourself searching for a spot on the beach.

Lifting your spirits during the darker months, winter holidays offer a respite from the cold. The sun is almost always shining on islands like Cyprus and the Canaries, and in resorts on the Egyptian Red Sea Riviera, although in general there are less destinations to choose from. During the winter months, holiday bargains are much easier to find so trips become much more affordable.
