By Linda Fulkerson

With the cost of fuel soaring and today's economic tough times, many Americans are seeking vacation locations closer to home. Arkansas is a centrally located state, which offers a variety of bargain travel options. Some of the best value places for money-saving getaways can be discovered here. If you're wondering what to do in Arkansas, continue reading.

Morrilton, Arkansas, is home to the state's first state park, Petit Jean State Park. Named for a legendary young French woman who, according to the story, followed her lover across the sea, eventually landing at the foot of this stunning mountain, Petit Jean boasts several activities from camping, wildlife watching, hiking, paddle boating, bird-watching, and photography. The park also offers a variety of romantic getaway cabins.

Besides the nearby mountain, Morrilton's quaint downtown district is a bargain shopper's dream-come-true. One of the best "junktique" shopping locations in Arkansas, the main street through the community is brimming with flea markets, second-hand shops, antique dealers, consignment stores, and boutiques. Each first Saturday of the month, additional shopping chances are available because vendors display their stuff on Mainstreet Morrilton. The community is a favorite stop in the "Bargains Galore on 64" network.

For travelers who like entertainment to shopping, this central Arkansas community boasts one of the region's best local theaters -- the Rialto Community Arts Center. The Rialto was constructed in 1911, and in its prime was known as one of the finest theaters in the South. Recently converted into a community effort, the theater now includes live local music, community theater productions, movies, and frequently hosts regional entertainers, including award-winning Elvis Tribute Artist, Tony Witt. The Rialto Gallery is adjacent to to the theater and displays different art exhibits throughout the year.

Fishing is another favorite activity for both locals and visitors. The Morrilton area is home to three lakes, and the Arkansas River is located just minutes from town. For hunters, the nearby Ed Gordon Wildlife Management Area is just a short drive down the road.
