Learn Emergency Response Through Mountain Rescue Training

By Steven Martin

These activities of mountain rescues refer to search and rescue that often occurs in the mountainous areas. These kind of mountains have include an ice, avalanches, glaciers, snow, alpine, and crevasses environment that have a paid rope access. And because these activities can be very difficult, especially in those kind of areas, many techniques and equipment are being developed for these purposes.

Helicopters are often used in these situations. This is because rescuers can see the victims and can extract them quickly. Search dogs are also used to locate the victims. Mountain rescue training is offered for those who wanted to become professionals or volunteer professionals. Paid rescue services often occurs in mountain grounds such as in ski resorts.

But most units are often voluntary teams, this is because it only happens occasionally and that it needs specific techniques with local knowledge that are required in some environments. These teams are usually made up of local climbers and local guides.

Paid services often work in cooperation with the voluntary teams. So this also means to say that helicopters that are paid may also work with the volunteer teams. Mountain rescues are often free, but there are some organization may charge for their services.

Anyone can join a voluntary team, but you must always see to it that you have the determination to do the work and that you are not nervous. So if you want to join in a certain organization, you first have to talk with the local teams and ask. You may talk to a few members so you will know the processes in joining their team.

Second is determine your own skills. You will undergo several steps when joining. Different teams have different rules and processes. Some organizations do assess your skills by doing interviews, doing practical assessments, and probationary positions before you become a trainee. Third is you must understand and know what their job is. You may do some research about the team, the things that are needed for volunteering, and their expectations from you.

Another thing is your families and employers should know about this. Though you are very excited about the job, your family have right to know, since they are ones who easily get worried. Everyday attendance may not be compulsory, but it will be checked from time to time during trainings and call outs. Your attendance will prove that you are one valuable member.

This type of rescue is expensive. It is because you will be the one to supply your own materials. These materials include your boots, head torch, backpack, and you protective clothing such as helmet or harness. Another thing is you should be willing to wait. Sometimes the team still wants more from you and this can be frustrating especially in times that you feel like you already have reached their standards.

Lastly is always be prepared because you will be taken into a high level training in the future. These are the technical skills. You must study on water and rope rescue, advanced first aid procedures, and mathematics and statistics for missing persons.
