Vacationers Should Consider Haida Gwaii Tours

By Tamika Powell

Haida Gwaii, formerly referred to as the Queen Charlotte Islands, is Canada's most remote string of islands. Also a Haida First Nation territory, the archipelago's rare characteristics and isolated location have resulted in its popularity among visitors from around the globe. There are many fans of Haida Gwaii tours, particularly those who enjoy sailing, hiking, beach combing, and photography. Such excursions are also favored by those who simply enjoy exploring intriguing and unique areas of the world.

Similar to excursions offered by natural history societies and other organizations, most Haida Gwaii tours start from a central location where comfortable accommodations are provided. Common areas from which to begin such tours include the Naikoon Provincial Park or the Tlell River. Participants in such excursions are usually offered the opportunity to explore cultural, natural and historical sections of the string of islands.

Most tours of this kind are guided by local individuals who have a significant amount of experience leading such excursions. They are also well versed in the history of the islands. This makes it easy for participants to learn about the area as they participate in sightseeing or engage in tourist activities. This is why the tour venue is considered recreational as well as educational.

Even though such excursions will vary in detail, depending on the sponsoring establishment, most allow as many as 12 participants, and the latter can look forward to covering all the major stops throughout the islands. A suitable amount of time is typically reserved for popular points of interest. However, some tours also focus on obscure places, which appeals to individuals who enjoy exploring lesser-known areas.

It takes approximately two hours to reach the islands by plane. Depending on the time of year one chooses to travel to Haida Gwaii, direct service may be available from Vancouver. However, if one is traveling during peak season, it is wise to make reservations well in advance. This will help travelers to avoid being shut out. It is also a wise course of action to have an alternate date in mind in case one's first choice is booked to capacity.

Packages are offered by numerous travel agencies that include accommodations, gratuities, meals, and airfare. While visiting Haida Gwaii, tourists will discover that meals usually consist of local foods prepared by area natives. Many individuals enjoy this aspect of the tour, as it provides a way for them to experience the area's local culture.

While visiting the islands, travelers will find that walk-on buses are the standard method of transportation to and from local activities and attractions. The buses usually have internal microphone systems, and are driven by licensed, qualified individuals who maintain current insurance. This transportation method gives vacationers a chance to socialize and speak about their experiences while touring.

Because there is a wide selection of organizations and travel agents offering Haida Gwaii tours, it is wise for prospective travelers to compare several packages prior to making a final decision. Participants should carefully read all paperwork provided by the tour coordinator or travel agency in order to familiarize himself or herself with the terms and conditions of the package. An excursion to this lovely and mesmerizing part of the world is sure to be unforgettable, regardless of one's individual vacation objectives.
