Fair Auction

By Ian Kleine

A less-than-common affair in fairs around the country are auctions.

Auctions are just that, the usual bidding and all that snazz. You could go for a dramatic auction, or you could go for a simple one. The main theme is players bid to buy something at prices that escalate by the minute, depending on how far the buyer's budget can stretch. There are a lot of common things to auction, with the theme stretching from the common (antiques, ornamental, land deeds) to the outlandish and far-off (service, a date, probably something unexpected). Just make sure to present at least ten things.

Ten items that would seriously pique the interest of any demographic out there in the fair. Auctions should not be limited to one group or one market. Auctions by far, would cost the same as setting up a booth, albeit you'll need to spend a hefty sum to use for advertising.

There are a lot of preparations needed to pull off a successful auction. Go with flyers, banner and posters to catch attention. Set the venue up earlier than expected to keep people excited. You could contract food stands and vendors to position themselves closer to your site so they could earn more audience and you can retain your own. This would put both parties in favorable positions.

Prepare the things you'll need. Things like placards, the stand, a table for the item (if it's too big or heavy) and the sound equipment and all that stuff. Prepare if it rains if the fair is located outside.

Auctions can rake you lots or little of money depending on the profitability and rarity of the item. You might win big or lose big with a rare baseball card, but then you could get away with an antique novelty cap. Be prepared to face these types of situations early on.

Learn from your auctions thereafter. Learn strategies how to rile up people into bidding more, and bring the heat of the situation up a notch more. The intensity can carry away most people into spending more before they realize what they are doing.

Interior decoration using Flea Market pieces

By Mara Hernandez-Capili

A day at a flea market spells fun and awesome treats for the whole family. There are just so many things to purchase from a flea market and your imagination should never be a limit in putting Flea market pieces together into your homes. Today I would be talking about how to transform cheap Flea Market finds into fashionable and savvy decorative elements into your homes.

I often thought that really a good design is not achievable by using expensive materials only, but how keen the designer is on putting pieces together that match. As an Interior Design practitioner during my free time I browse through the Internet for the current design trends and I am always in awe at how a marvelous and great looking interior is actually designed using cheap, second hand and flea market pieces. Let's take a look at some flea market pieces and how they are turned into charming decorative interior pieces.

The design that I will mention are gathered from the Better Homes and Garden website. Let's take a look:

Vintage bronze and silver drawer pulls salvaged from a flea market could be excellent key holders. Just try to keep them in their usual color, add a little bit of polish and hang them on your living room wall, next to your door. Turn an old beat-up window shutter into an elegant mail center by giving it a fresh coat of paint and leaning it against a wall or a corner, this mail center could be an excellent conversation piece for your guests. Use the shutter slats to tuck in important notes that should never be forgotten and left behind.

A very fresh and interesting remake for an old iron fence is to transform it into a coat rack. Take the tip of the iron fence (save the rest of the fence body for later use) and nail it on a wall to use as a coat hanger.

How to Handle a Table

By Ian Kleine

It takes more than mental preparation to stay up and handle a booth in a craft fair. There's more to it than just guarding the booth all day or looking bored about it. As much as possible, first and foremost, the one who should be guarding the booth is the owner himself. This is most recommended when you are a starter at the field of craft fairs. There's a reason why, and it will be explained later.

Firstly, if this is your first time, it is rather unwise to try and hand your position out to other people when handling a booth in the craft fair. As the owner, it is your responsibility to carry your booth. Just think of the impression people would have when they know that you, as the proprietor, is not available at the site. As the owner, it is your responsibility to promote your products and your booth.

Primp your booth up appropriately and with simple effects. Avoid being an attention grabber too much, especially if you are not sure of what you're doing (being a newb if you are one). Observe and learn from other people in the fair as well, especially those that seem to have years of experience behind them. Talk and converse, share ideas and learn from the over all experience.

Have at least someone to watch out for you too. You will have to eat and do your "businesses" sometime during the day, so have someone you trust (be it a family member or a relative) to go and stand post in your booth or table while you do your thing. Have that person also be very familiar with your product or craft in case someone comes along and asks about it while you were away.

Handling a booth will be a very different experience each time, but with each experience, you will find that the job will only get easier and easier. Take notice and you won't have to have a hard time during the craft fair.

Cheese Fest

By Ian Kleine

There are varied ways to celebrate this simple dairy product. The cheese has been one of the more ancient foods that have survived the trend of modernization, and has been the forefront for accompanying bread, tomatoes and the poor man's rotund fair. Truly, cheese is indeed, the next best thing since sliced bread.

As varied as there are different countries and different localities, there are just as many varieties of cheese that have sprouted from them. The innovators of the new types of cheeses are usually the farmers and cattlemen who milk the cows. For after all, they were the ones who developed, raised and milked the cattle. And cheese doesn't just come from cows. You can have goat cheese, yak cheese, llama cheese and water buffalo cheese.

So how does one go into making a festival for cheese? Well, first off, you have to get the local community's participation. Like, at least three quarters of the overall population of the community. And it doesn't matter whether you have either little to no production of cheese. You can do well as being the top consumer for cheese if you want. As long as it the city has an inclination for cheese, a festival for it will not be so far-fetched than as it seems.

A community meeting would set things and records straight as to what to do for the festival. A float? Perhaps a tasting session? What about the option of doing a cheese exhibition for everyone. Having a fest doesn't automatically entail the rough housery and the ambience of a mini Mardi Gras. For the bigger part, most festivals usually observe a quieter, more controlled tone and atmosphere.

Think about it. There are a lot of things to do, a lot of options to choose from. But it's easier to just go up and at it, and follow everyone's senses. After all, everyone will be celebrating, and not just you.

Traveling Safely To International Locations

By Chris Channing

Vacationing in a foreign country is something we all dream of- but don't let the excitement of finally being able to do so overwhelm you. Take the time to learn certain safety requirements so that your trip will be as enjoyable as possible. This could include anything from keeping your valuables safe, to safeguarding your body from disease.

It is considered normal to change the money of your current currency into the currency of the country you are visiting as you arrive. Some locations may accept foreign money if it is a popular tourist location, but you should never assume that everywhere will do this. Instead change out a large amount of your money when you arrive, saving back some for emergency.

Just like taxi drivers don't always have the best reputation in large cities of the United States, taxi drivers elsewhere may not be as trustworthy as you would think. You are in better hands by renting your own vehicle or taking a shuttle from the airport to your destination- although it may be more expensive.

Find a hotel room that allows for a safe to be provided. A safe can store your valuables, such as your passport or identification card. If you were to lose either of these things, you will find yourself in a tight situation. Horror stories have arose in which travelers were stuck in a foreign country from either having these documents stolen or lost by accident.

If you haven't already, start picking up on the language in the country. Simple words such as "yes," "no," and "thank you" are valuable additions to your new vocabulary. You will have to learn to steer clear of unintentional offensive remarks or gestures. What may be considered normal in your own culture could translate into something vulgar or offensive in another. It's best to learn the culture differences before setting out and causing an incident.

If you are going to a location that is popular among tourists, you will likely be able to make use of traveler's checks. These types of checks are excellent for travelers, since they can be replaced should they be lost or stolen. There are certain rules and regulations to follow in getting the money replaced, so it is still a good idea to treat your traveler's checks as if they were irreplaceable.

In Conclusion

Things become easier once you start traveling more frequently. Once you get the basics down, you find that traveling is such a rewarding experience. Talk to a travel adviser for more ideas on your vacation.
