By Frederick Hoymer

Swindon is an English town that was originally meant to be a city, and was designed to be a city, but was not granted city status. It was first a town as then had grand plans to be expanded in order to deal with the population overspill from London.

There is plenty of shopping in town as the main shopping area is in the center of town and along the Canal. The Parade and the Brunel Centre are the main shopping spots. You also can visit the Swindon tented market in the town center which was newly reopened in 2009. The McArthur Glen Designer outlet offers discounted clothing and you can find many craft shops at the Studley Grange Craft Village.

There are several historic houses to visit in the area including Lydiard Park that contains the Lydiard House. This house was designed in an Elizabethan style though it has been updated and modernized since the English civil war. It has been open for public visits since 1955 when it was completely restored to its former glory. This park is considered small when compared to many other historic homes but the grounds are beautifully kept up.

Besides shopping there is plenty of history o see and you should not miss Lydiard Park and Lydiard House. This house is an Elizabethan home though it was updated after the English civil war. Visitors have been enjoying the grounds and gardens since the mid 50s when the home was restores. This is a small estate for English stately homes but it is none the less quite beautiful.

A lovely church form 1851 is the Lady of the Hill. This church was built to replace the older medieval church as it could no longer sustain the growing parish. The Goddard family was the main contributors to the church and there are many memorials inside to this family. Of particular note is the west window which provides an excellent view of the hollyhock lawn.

Lincoln - The Cathedral, Steep Street And Much More

By Frederick Hoymer

Lincoln carries the name of a Cathedral town as it contains its own cathedral. This town is located in Lincolnshire, England. This is a very old town as the very first town has been dated to the 1st century BC during the Iron Age.

The first Lincoln Cathedral was completed in 1092 and was very important. Unfortunately it burned to the ground after an earthquake and fire that occurred in 1185 and had to be rebuilt. The newer cathedral was much larger than the first one and with its main spire it was the tallest building in the world at the time, taller than the pyramids. The cathedral has several bells in each of its towers as well as the bell the great Tom of Lincoln.

The cathedral is quite important and the first Lincoln Cathedral was finished in 1092. It was rebuilt after an earthquake and fire in 1185, though the new cathedral was much larger. Originally the main spire was taller than the Great Pyramids, making the cathedral the tallest building in the world. The cathedral has several bells, The Great Tom of Lincoln, thirteen bells in the south west tower, five in the central tower and two in the northwest tower.

As with the Romans the location of the castle was strategic and easy to defend. Lincoln had many battles in which the castle played an important role. Lincoln Castel was also used as a tool to control the interior of the country.

Newport arch is what remains of a Roman gate form the 3rd century. This road is still used and is the oldest used arch in the United Kingdom. This was one of three gates in which you could get into town. This was the original north gate. It was constructed when the Romans occupied the city and it was the capital of the Roman lands in the United Kingdom.

A popular but strenuous hike is the walk up Steep Hill. This street is in the historic part of town and most individuals that partake in the climb up need to use the provided hand rails. As you can image the name comes from the steep gradient of the street. You can stop and rest at one of the many tea rooms, pubs and independent shops as most people will need to stop for a rest going up and coming down the hill.

If you want a bit of the tropics then you should visit the Sir Joseph Banks conservatory named after the famous explorer and naturalist.

Why Driving While Speaking On The Phone Is Illegal

By Johann Ken Flanders

Speaking on a mobile phone while driving is something that most people all over the world do and that many people don't see a problem with, however many people do as it has now been made illegal. Although there are millions of people across the world who own cars and who drive, however there seem to be only a few people who actually drive how the law intends, cautiously and mindfully.

Talking on a phone while driving has become a serious issue because of the amount of accidents and fatalities that have occurred as a result. The reason it causes so many accidents is because of the level of concentration is compromised and therefore so is the control over the vehicle.

It's not just the people who break the driving laws that get affected by it, it is not uncommon for someone to be cautiously driving along, adhering perfectly to the laws of the road and then for a car to slam into the back or the side of yours because they weren't paying attention.

You may wonder how on earth this could have happened when you were completely conscious of your driving. The fault lies with the other guy who banged into your car as he could be talking on a mobile phone while driving. So, talking on a mobile phone while driving may prove to be hazardous not only for you as a driver but also to other commuters and motorists on the road.

People have been found driving well over the speed limit whilst talking on their mobile phones in the past. This has to stop for the sake of all our lives. The law says that anyone who is caught driving while talking on their mobile phone will be penalized with 3 or 6 points on their licence depending on the severity of the situation. If you have a hands-free kit however, then you should always hook your phone up to it before you start driving so that if you do have to answer a call, you can do it safely and legally.

A Few Quick Facts About Swansea Neath - Port Talbot

By Frederick Hoymer

The coastal city of Swansea Neath - Port Talbot, Wales (in actuality, Swansea refers also to the county, and Neath Port Talbot is more properly a county borough) is part of the historic Vale of Glamorgan. It has a current population -- when all areas considered part of Swansea are added in -- of around 271,000 people, though most would say that it actually has 171,000 or so in its urban area.

It actually can be a bit confusing to figure out just what Swansea Neath-Port Talbot, Swansea or Swansea Neath really means or if there's really anything to become all that concerned about, because there are several different variations on the Welsh city, county and county borough along with the wider urban area. For sure, though; there's much to get out and see in the region.

Swansea is located along the southwestern coastline of Wales in a stretch of sandy coast. It's the second most populous city in Wales next to Cardiff and was quite a big player in the global copper industry of the 19th century. It earned the nickname 'Copperopolis' for its almost fanatic devotion to working with that particular metal.

There is evidence of human settlement in and around the city that can be found in all three of the major historical ages, including the Stone and Iron Ages. Also, the Romans themselves visited the region as well as the Vikings, who actually gave the town its name (Swansea is derived from the Old Norse language). It was once a thriving Viking port, as a matter of fact.

As a Viking seaport and as a port throughout its history, the city saw much industry evolve, shipping wool and wines out of its port as well as coal in later centuries. It gained worldwide renown for its copper-working workforce and most industrial scholars would say that the 1700s and 1800s were probably the time of the city's most important prosperity.

Swansea took full advantage of that fact during the Industrial Revolution, and coal mining as well as other heavy industries were exploited to their full advantage along with its position as a thriving seaport. The 20th century was not nearly as congenial to Swansea, which basically experienced a decline throughout that time frame. These days, though, it's undergoing a nice renaissance.

Port Talbot -- which is sometimes more properly known as Neath Port Talbot -- has played a close role with Swansea over the centuries. Both are part of the Vale of Glamorgan and though Swansea itself is also classed as a county, Port Talbot probably considers itself closer to Swansea in outlook than it does as its own county. Both are certainly excellent examples of Wales in all of its facets.
