Reading is a multifaceted process of interpret ing symbols and construction of ideas. It is one of the best ways to access thoughts and ideals. Artist and Audience: Make a Connection

By Ian Kleine

As the artist, you will have to face your customers sometime sooner or later. It is an inevitability. If you want to sell stuff, then you'll have to face the figurative shark sooner or later. Customer relation is a part of business, and you will have to face this demon sooner than enough.

You don't have to act all willy-nilly if you don't want to, nor do you have to plaster on that fake smile you always see in most generic salesmen. The benefit of being an artist is that you are supposed to be the epitome of reality, the harbinger of emotion whether distorted or not. Still, people are people. How you talk and relate to them will determine whether you will make a sale or not.

There are general approaches as to how to make a good impression, a reputation that is easy for the customer, and an atmosphere that would draw them in, like bees to honey and nectar.

Let's take a situational example. Customer asks you about a piece you just did. It is a fine piece, with varied colors and lovely shapes and shades. Now, as the artist, you are to explain it to a language the customer can understand. Remember, if they want to buy it, they have to know the meaning behind it first. That is the usual trail of thought, the psychology of buying stuff.

He or she asks you, what is your painting about? Answer it directly and without impediment. Tell them the truth, and the meaning behind the oils and the colors. Don't give out credentials like 'oh this is a work by a renowned artist'. It is information that is not currently needed. And don't give out jargon-y descriptions. It scares them away. Convey the message and the thought of the piece with simplicity and accuracy. Leave no censorship if you have to. And you usually have to.

Costa Rica Living: an Ant and the Photographer

By Frank Scott

After living in Costa Rica for over 8 years I can only say that life has been outstanding. As a Photographer I have photographed a number of beautiful and incredible sights and the following is a small example of how close I am to amazing discoveries.

As you know we have leaf cutter ants in the jungle and they are a very busy lot who work very hard all day long. This is a story about their strength and persistence that happened one day.

In his travels across my driveway in front of my favourite flowering trees that he and his friends were munching, a leaf cutter ant we will name Bill picked up a matchstick, you know, one of the wooden ones. This brave soul dropped its leaf and started to carry the match upright as if it were a leaf.

I carefully picked up the matchstick thinking that I would lessen the load. And incredible as it might seem, Bill did not let go and was picked up along with the match, his little feet still trying to march away.

I took the match, with ant, to the terrace of my house and put it down thinking that he would let go. Obviously Bill was looking for his marching band, because he began to march around with the matchstick held high weaving around chairs and tables but remaining on the terrace.

Without hesitation, he marched around and around in military precision carrying his flag. I watched and photographed him for over an hour amazed and wondering when he would drop the match and go on his merry way as he must have been panting by now, not that you can see an ant pant, believe me!

Now I realize their stamina and persistence when they march like an army carrying their leaves back to their nest. As Bill became very tired I eventually was able to take away the matchstick and he was freed from his load to go back to, what else, carrying leaves.

Life is hard for all of us but are you willing and ready to drop a small item to carry one that is monumental? Bill the ant did. What a creature!

Who among us would drop a light load to carry a very heavy one for our team? Think about it and what we can learn from this wonderful creature that we often take for granted.

Dining In Brisbane

By Patrick Daniels

Brisbane diners are spoilt for choice. There are exceedingly good restaurants almost everywhere you go. Some suburbs to note are as follows:

Bulimba: This is a more informal, relaxing suburb with charm. There are over fifteen al-fresco dining restaurants, as well as fashion shops and a historic cinema complex. Bulimba is a great place for families to visit, as well as romantic getaways. Among the restaurants there are a few worth singling out. Oxford 152, contemporary restaurant with an award winning brewery. Chill bar, modern Australian cuisine and Earth and Sea Pizza and Pasta BYO Family Restaurant.

Paddington, Caxton Street: This is the place to go if you like dancing, live music and fine dining. There is always a great vibe in this street as soon as it begins to get dark and especially if there is a sporting event on at the nearby Suncorp Stadium. Casablanca, Hotel LA and the Caxton Hotel all combine separate bars, live music and dance floor facilities. Gambaros is one of Brisbane's oldest and still thriving restaurants, established in 1972 and this is where you should visit for seafood favorites and a great wine list.

Chinatown: Here you will find a great assortment of Asian cuisine restaurants. For Chinese you have Golden Palace and King of Kings Seafood, a Japanese cuisine favorite is Koh-Ya where food is grilled at your table and for Thai you can eat at Thai-Wi-Rat. You can also choose restaurants specializing in Malaysian, Cambodian and Vietnamese cuisine.

CBD: Broken down into three zones, with many dining options to choice from. The first zone, Queen Street Mall, has mostly food courts and a few fresh air cafes. The second zone is on the waterfront, Riverside, Eagle Street Pier. Here you will find Customs House, Groove Train, Jade Buddha, and Cha Cha Char, which makes one of the best steaks I've ever tasted. The third zone is bordered by Felix, Edward and Albert street. Here you can find Belgian Beer Garden, Giannis, Palettes Brasserie Bar and the Brasserie on the river.
